The owner of this Elsternwick townhouse had just settled on the property and wanted to update the front entry. The existing door was tired and dated. But the frame and sidelights were in good condition — there was no reason to rip everything out and start from scratch.
The job was straightforward: replace the door leaf only, modernise the hardware, and leave the existing frame and sidelights untouched. A clean upgrade without unnecessary structural work.
Because the opening was a standard 820mm x 2040mm, we could use a stock Meranti shiplap door — 40mm thick, horizontal lining board profile. No custom manufacturing needed, which kept the cost down and the timeline short.
Meranti is a reliable entry door timber. It machines cleanly, takes paint or stain well, and handles Melbourne’s weather without the checking you sometimes get with softer species. The shiplap profile gives the door face some depth and shadow line without overcomplicating the design.
Hardware is Zanda throughout — stainless steel hinges and a matching entrance set with lever handle and deadbolt. Both locks keyed alike so one key does the lot. We fitted the door to the existing jamb, hung it, installed hardware, and adjusted the strike plates for a clean latch. The whole front door replacement was done in a single visit.
