The Challenge

The laundry at this Mornington home had no natural light. The external door was a solid flush panel — functional, but it turned the room into a box. The owner wanted a glazed replacement to bring daylight in, and they’d already purchased a digital smart lock they wanted fitted at the same time.

Non-standard door height — 2340mm — meant a stock 2040mm door wasn’t going to cut it. The door had to be the right size for the opening, and the smart lock hardware had to be fitted correctly to operate reliably.

The Solution

An 820 x 2340mm Meranti single-lite door. One large clear glazed panel running the upper portion of the leaf — enough glass to properly light the laundry without sacrificing the structural timber above and below. Meranti is the right timber for an external laundry door: it’s stable, handles moisture-adjacent environments without excessive movement, and takes paint well.

The 2340mm height is non-standard, but it’s a dimension we cut and hang regularly. No modifications to the existing frame were needed — the door was fabricated to suit the opening and hung straight in.

The customer-supplied smart lock was fitted as part of the same visit. Digital smart locks vary in their prep requirements, and getting the backset, bore size, and strike plate right the first time matters. It was all done and operational before we left site. The Result

A properly lit laundry and a functioning smart lock — done in about three hours. The clear glazing changed the feel of the room entirely. The smart lock operates cleanly in the door. Total cost: $1,480 + GST including the non-standard door size and smart lock installation.
