Three numbers and a few photos. That’s all we need to price most front doors, usually within 24 hours. Here’s how to get them right in about five minutes.
What you need
- A metal tape measure
- Your phone camera
- Something to write on
1. Height
Measure the door itself, not the frame. Run the tape from the top edge of the door to the bottom edge.
- Measure on the hinge side and the lock side. Older houses move, so the two can differ.
- Write both down in millimetres.
- Most Melbourne front doors are 2040mm high. Newer and architectural homes are often 2340mm or taller.
2. Width
Measure the door from one edge to the other.
- Measure across the top, the middle and the bottom. Write down all three.
- The most common width is 820mm. Wider entries are often 920, 1020 or 1200mm.
3. Thickness
Open the door and measure across the edge.
- Most front doors are between 35 and 40mm thick.
- Thickness tells us whether a new door will sit in your existing frame, and which hinges and locks suit.
Then take a few photos
- The front of the door, from outside, showing the whole door and frame.
- The back of the door, from inside.
- The frame and sill, close up, if they’re rotten, soft or damaged.
The more you send up front, the faster and sharper your quote.
Tips that save a second visit
- Always work in millimetres.
- Keeping your frame? Measure the door, not the opening.
- Frame rotten? Tell us. A new frame adds about $1,200, supplied and installed, with the old one removed.
- Odd size? No problem. Every door is built to size by Bespoke Doors in Moorabbin.
What happens next
- Send us your three sizes and photos.
- We price it, usually within 24 hours.
- Come and see the doors at the Bespoke Doors showroom, 7 Nelson Street, Moorabbin (Wednesday to Saturday, 9am–3pm), if you’d like.
- Once you go ahead, we visit to check every measurement before anything is built.
Common questions
Do I measure the door or the frame?
The door. If the frame needs replacing, send photos and we’ll take it from there.
What is a standard front door size in Australia?
2040mm high by 820mm wide is the most common. Thickness is usually 35 to 40mm.
Do you need to come out before you quote?
No. Most quotes come straight from your photos and sizes. We measure on site before anything is built.
Or email your sizes and photos to sales@doorsreplaced.com.au.
