The Challenge

The existing entry at this Brighton property was a wrought iron gate set into a curved brick arch. It looked fine twenty years ago. Now the welds were failing, the frame was pulling apart, and it offered zero privacy. Anyone walking past could see straight through.

The real problem was the opening itself. A curved brick arch isn’t a standard rectangle. You can’t order a stock door and trim it to fit. The arch had its own geometry — slight irregularities in the brickwork, a radius that didn’t match any catalogue profile. Whatever replaced the iron gate had to be purpose-built for that specific opening.

The Solution

We started by templating the arched opening on-site. Every curve and dimension was traced precisely so the workshop had an exact profile to work from. Those templates went to our fabrication partner at Bespoke Doors, where a custom arched jamb and matching door were built to fit the brick opening without modification to the existing masonry.

The door itself uses Vic Ash lining boards arranged vertically — a clean, linear look that sits well against the texture of the old brickwork. The arched top of the door follows the curve of the jamb exactly. No filler pieces, no compromise shapes.

Installation covered the full scope: removing the old iron gate, fitting the custom arched jamb into the brick opening, hanging the door, installing hardware, and final alignment. This is the kind of job our architectural custom front doors service handles — one-off builds where the opening dictates the design.

The Result

Where there was a rusted-out iron gate with daylight showing through every gap, there’s now a solid Vic Ash timber door that fills the arch completely. The lining board profile gives it a contemporary edge while the arched top respects the character of the original brickwork. Privacy and security sorted. The street frontage looks completely different.
