The Challenge

This Sorrento property still had its original 1970s sliding door and flyscreen setup at the front entry. For a holiday property on the Mornington Peninsula that might have been charming once. By the time this job came to us, the sliding gear was worn out, the screen was torn, and the whole system offered almost no security.

The opening itself was large — wider than a standard hinged entry — and the surrounding structure had been built around the sliding system. Converting from sliding to hinged meant a significant reconfiguration of the opening, not just a door swap.

For a property this close to the coast, material selection matters. Salt air, humidity, and sun exposure accelerate deterioration in softwoods and poorly stabilised timbers. Whatever went in had to last.

The Solution

We specified Australian Chestnut for this job. It’s a dense, stable native hardwood with natural resistance to movement and a tight grain that holds up in coastal conditions. The lining board profile gives the door its character — horizontal or vertical boards depending on orientation — and at 42mm thick it has real weight and presence.

The door was manufactured by Bespoke Doors at 1200 x 2040mm and reinforced with an EverFrame internal metal system. EverFrame runs a steel skeleton inside the timber door body, which prevents warping and twisting over time — important for a large-format door in an exposed location. It also significantly improves the structural integrity for security purposes.

The opening conversion required new framing and a rebuilt jamb to accept a hinged door. This is the kind of complex, custom scope our architectural custom front doors service is set up for — where the brief goes well beyond a standard replacement.

The Result

A 1970s sliding door and torn flyscreen are gone. In their place: a 1200 x 2040mm, 42mm thick Australian Chestnut lining board door, EverFrame reinforced, sitting in a purpose-built frame rebuilt for hinged operation. The door has the weight and finish of a serious architectural entry. It will outlast the decade-plus that the old sliding system had already been running. Total cost: $9,500 + GST supplied and installed.
