The Challenge

The garage access door at this Clayton home had given up. The timber was swelling, the face was delaminating, and the hardware was fighting the door instead of working with it. Internal garage doors sit in an awkward environment — temperature swings, humidity from the garage space, and often less maintenance attention than the front entry.

When a garage door delaminate and swells enough to bind in the frame, you can plane it back temporarily. But once the timber has failed to that point, you’re on a cycle — it comes back every year until the door is replaced.

The Solution

We replaced it with a StormBloc door finished in Surfmist Colorbond. Surfmist is a neutral, warm white that works against most render and cladding colours — common in residential construction and a good match for this property.

StormBloc’s composite construction is exactly right for a garage access door. Steel-faced, foam-cored, no timber to absorb moisture or delaminate. It won’t move with the garage’s temperature and humidity cycling. No repainting needed to keep the substrate protected.

Hardware is Zanda: a full entrance set with lever handle, deadbolt for security, and three stainless steel hinges. Stainless hinges are the call for garage environments — they won’t rust where standard hardware would. The entrance set handles daily use. The deadbolt means the garage is properly secured, not just latched.

The Result

A garage access door that won’t swell, delaminate, or bind. The Surfmist Colorbond finish requires no maintenance. Stainless hinges handle the environment. Full locking with deadbolt keeps the garage secure. The swelling problem is gone permanently. Priced at around $2,000 + GST installed.
